What is a good recipe to bleach Monarch eggs?
|
This question is a common one. Bleaching or disinfecting butterfly eggs is a common practice among many butterfly farmers. Bleaching eggs kills Ophryocystis elektroskirrha OE spores on Monarch butterfly eggs. Pathogens on the egg shells are killed when they are disinfected with an effective 'recipe'. As a hatchling caterpillar eats its way out of its egg, any pathogens on the egg shell that it eats can cause the caterpillar to become diseased and possibly die. In this video, we share our method of bleaching eggs at Shady Oak Butterfly Farm.
