People often ask what is wrong with their chrysalis, pupa, or cocoon. A small hole is in the side and a butterfly did not emerge. The answer is usually; Chalcid wasps. These little rascals look like small black ants or gnats. There are many species of chalcid wasps, from trichogramma wasps that lay eggs in butterfly eggs to larger chalcid wasps, about the size of houseflies.
