Checkered White butterflies are plentiful at the sides of roads and in fields in the spring when Virginia Peppergrass and their other host plants are growing. Female butterflies white color is not pure white but is darker in color, appearing almost as if they are dirty. Male Checkered White butterflies white is very white, as if washed in bleach. |

Checkered White butterflies are found drinking nectar from many small wild flowers. Photos on this page of adults drinking nectar from flea bane, wild verbena, frog fruit, and Virginia pepper weed. The butterfly bush photo at the top was taken in the exhibit at Shady Oak Butterfly Farm. These butterflies have a short proboscis and must drink nectar from short flowers. Other nectar plants include anise hyssop, aster, and spanish needles. |
