Painted Lady Butterfly Pupae Chrysalises Wiggle and Move

Painted Lady and many other butterfly and moth chrysalids (pupae) move and wiggle when they are touched. These continue to move, partly because when one moves, it touches another which causes it to move.

It is believed that this is an instinctive reaction to touch that helps to protect them from some predators and parasitoids such as chalcid wasps.
